Yeats Winter School is a 2 day event held annually at the end of January at the Sligo Park Hotel. A weekend of relaxation, lectures, music and a tour of Yeats Country.

The Yeats Winter School offers an opportunity for reading, exploring and thinking about Yeats’s poetry, plays and prose, and for learning more about him and the other creative members of his family, amidst the landscape which inspired them.
The event is hosted by Sligo Park Hotel in association with Yeats Society Sligo.
Sligo Park Hotel is set on lush landscaped quiet parkland and surrounded by some of the most scenic countryside in Ireland. The weekend tariff includes full use of the Leisure Club.
Director JAMES PETHICA
James Pethica teaches Irish Studies and Modernism at Williams College in Massachusetts. A former Director of the Yeats International Summer School (2010-12), he is at work on the authorised biography of Lady Gregory for Oxford University Press. His publications include Last Poems: Manuscript Materials by W.B.Yeats, Yeats: A Norton Critical Edition, and, most recently Lady Gregory: Shorter Writings 1882-1900.
Guest Lecturer ANNE MARGARET DANIEL
Anne Margaret Daniel teaches literature and humanities at the New School University in New York City. She has written on topics from Oscar Wilde’s trials to F. Scott Fitzgerald, Bob Dylan, and contemporary music. Her edition of Fitzgerald’s previously unpublished short stories *I’d Die for You and Other Lost Stories*was published by Scribner in 2017; she is currently at work on an edition of Zelda Sayre Fitzgerald’s letters. She is a former Associate Director of the Yeats International Summer School, and first attended the school as a student in 1992.
Guest Lecturer IGGY McGOVERN
Iggy McGovern was born in 1948 in Coleraine; since 1979 he has resided in Dublin, where he lectured in Physics at Trinity College, retiring in 2013. He has three collections of poetry with Dedalus Press: The King of Suburbia (2005), Safe House (2010) and The Eyes of Isaac Newton (2017). Other collections include A Mystic Dream of 4 (2013) and Making Waves (2019), both with Quaternia Press. Awards include The Hennessy Award for Poetry and The Glen Dimplex New Writers Award for Poetry.

8.30pm: Welcome and Reading by Iggy McGovern
Saturday 25th January
9.30 am: Lecture by James Pethica — Yeats, Lady Gregory and the first Abbey Theatre USA tour, 1911-1912
11.15 am: Lecture by Iggy Mc Govern — “Making Waves” Physicist Erwin Schroedinger, this is your life! So ‘tis to be Coach will drop participants into town to enjoy lunch at their leisure.
2.15pm: Savour ‘WB Yeats and Sligo’ with an open fire, tea and scones: at the Yeats Building courtesy of the Yeats Society. Visit the Model Gallery on the Mall for exhibition Jack Butler Yeats ‘Salt Water Ballads’ or reconvene at Markievicz Road close to Yeats Building for a tour of Yeats Country.
Sunday 26th January
10.30 am: Lecture by Anne Margaret Daniel — Once upon a time in America: The Yeatses’ excellent adventure, 1934 Followed by James Pethica — “I have come into my strength, / And words obey my call’: How Yeats drafted poems
12.30pm: Departure (or plan to stay a 3rd night at €69 B&B per person sharing).
